Project Overview

The Virgin Islander is a fictional lifestyle magazine about life and love on the U.S. Virgin Islands, and this particular issue focuses on characters from the novel Land of Love and Drowning by Tiphanie Yanique. The character names and storylines are entirely from the book, and this magazine brings that story to life.

Finding the Models

One of the fun challenges of this magazine was to find models to represent the characters from the novel. The novel has not been adapted into a movie or a TV series, so it was completely up to me to find models who matched their description. I scoured social media platforms to find models, looked through all of their available photoshoots, and I ended up lucking out with the content I found.

Writing the Content

Since this is a lifestyle magazine, I followed a popular format found in those types of magazines, which is that the feature article is of an interviewer asking questions to a celebrity. In this case, the fictional interviewer is interviewing the main character of Land of Love and Drowning, Anette Bradshaw.

Other Sections

Beyond the main article, I also designed a full-spread advertisement, a one-page article, and a back-cover advertisement.
